YOUR FALL MOVIE: BENEATH THE DARKNESS

Visit the DARK Side of Smithville…

Remember how charming Smithville came across in Hope Floats? Just around the corner from where, in 1998, high school sweethearts Birdee and Justin (played by Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr.) were reunited, you’ll find a grand, two-story white house. This home was the setting for the horror film Beneath the Darkness, filmed in Smithville and released in 2011.

This stately home was the site of the 2011 horror movie, “Beneath the Darkness,” starring Dennis Quaid.

In Beneath the Darkness, three Smithville High School students play super sleuths to prove the town’s mortician, Ely Vaughn, played by Dennis Quaid, committed murder. Vaughn was revered when he was Smithville’s star quarterback, but since the death of his wife, he has turned into a recluse, generating stories of the supernatural and other dastardly goings-on.

In truth, Dennis Quaid wasn’t scary at all. While filming the movie, he got to know the locals, formed friendships and threw an impromptu concert to help those who had lost their homes in the 2011 Bastrop County Complex Wildfire.

The house that played the role of the mortician’s home and funeral parlor remains a bit daunting for those who have seen Beneath the Darkness. In fact, its new resident has been warned by the locals not to see the movie.
