In this exciting new hands-on class at Earth Native Wilderness School, students will learn how to create both an atlatl and the an atlatl dart using natural materials including turkey feather fletching and sinew for binding them down to the shaft.
All throughout prehistory, ancient peoples from all over the world developed a multitude of unique tools for harvesting food. Among all the technologies invented for hunting game, the atlatl and dart was the first true propulsion system, beyond the human arm, that consisted of both a projectile and a launching device.
In addition to making an atlatl and dart, the class will cover the skills of holding and throwing the atlatl for distance as well as accuracy, and have fun playing a primitive game similar to Lawn Darts. Each student will make their own atlatl and dart that they will take home with them.
Adult class, but age 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult.
