ENWS: Pine Needle Baskets 2024
November 16
November 16 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
10:00am - 3:00pm
Event Navigation
Join Earth Native Wilderness School to explore the ancient art of pine needle basket making to learn about this primitive skill from the East Coast natives. By stitching a coil of pine needles together, natives would create baskets and vessels for food, water, and tools. Pine needle basket makers are still using the original coiling and stitching method that the natives once did. Artists can create a wide variety of baskets with different types of designs by using unique stitching patterns and bending the needles to very unique shapes.
Students will learn everything from harvesting the needles to storing them, soaking them, and finally using them to make their very own basket from locally sourced pine needles. This is a fun, hands-on nature craft for ages 9 to adult!
This is an adult class, but it is open to ages 9 and up. Youth 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult participant.
